Building community and encouraging empathy
by telling the stories of the Holocaust through the eyes of students

Hasten Holocaust Museum

How might we encourage students outside of the Jewish community to increase their cultural awareness through the eyes of their peers?

This EMDD project team assisted teachers at the Hasten Hebrew Academy of Indianapolis in making their completely student-produced Holocaust museum a learning experience not just for their own students but students all over Indianapolis as well. The team evaluated design thinking techniques and collaborated with the school to define the museum’s narrative and brand, with an eye toward producing a transmedia marketing plan and virtual tour that engages students and teachers nationwide.

The project team hosted a day-long workshop to teach students the skills needed to use design thinking in their own projects. Data gathered during the workshop influenced the team’s final “Design Thinking Blueprint” for middle school teachers.
